Background at the Käferschule

The Early Birds Project is an English program initiative that has been integrated into the Käferschule since 2016. The project began with Prof. Dr. Carl Hahn and his timely collaboration with the Antonius-Holling Foundation. The Early Birds project was launched in August 2007, at the Edith Stein Kindergarten. Their first group of Early Birds consisted of seventeen children with one Native English Teacher. The project has now been running for over10 years.

Since 2016, two Early Birds groups from the Edith Stein Kindergarten have been placed at the Käferschule. The first group started in the academic year 2016/17. Notably, the number of participants has consistently grown each year, underscoring the acceptance and effectiveness of these courses.

Implementation at school

The program is structured through four English afternoon lessons per week.

  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, between 12.45 hr to 16.00 hr. Friday is an optional English games day for 1st and 2nd class groups.
  • Each Early Bird class is split into a group determined by their grade level.
  • A safe learning environment is created for all students to learn through  a structured timetable.

The Early Birds curriculum has been developed around five key language learning areas:

  • Listening
  • Understanding
  • Speaking
  • Reading (Storytime, Guided Reading and Independent Readers)
  • Writing (Pre-writing Grade 1 and 2, Writing Grade 3 and Grade 4)

This comprehensive curriculum is aimed at fostering confidence in English language skills, to gain the ability and confidence to communicate in English, providing an enriching educational experience for all Early Bird participants.

Concept

A qualified English teacher conducts these engagin g lessons in English at the Grundschule.
